After turning off Stuart Highway and driving about 140 miles west, we reached Ayers Rock, also known as Uluru.
We are now in the dead center of the country – Alice Springs. It’s been in the 90’s and 100’s degrees F for the last week. And because of wet weather to the north, it’s a bit humid as well.
We arrived in Paris to cold, winter weather. Sandy’s parents met us there and we spent the next few days sightseeing in Paris and in Chartres, about one hour south by train.
We are currently riding the Eurostar train between London and Paris. We left about two hours ago and are now 18 minutes into our 25-minute underground crossing of the English Channel.
We’ve started week two of our vacation here in Japan. One of the things that struck me about how Japan is different from the U.S. is their use of slippers.

After some rough traveling, we first visited the pandas in Chengdu and then relaxed in Dali. Among the highlights there was a visit to a local market.
Our last stop in China proper was in Yangshao, a short distance from Guilin. Here we enjoyed a variety of activities, including biking and hiking.
It is Friday and we have been in Yangshao the last few days. It is a small town (for China) about 40 miles south of Guilin in Southern China.
