19 – 22 January 2004
We took a 12 hour all night train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. From there, we boarded a ferry for a five hour trip to Ko Pha Ngan. We stayed on a beach on the northern side of the island. The nearest town, a small fishing village, was a 30 minute walk down a dirt road.
We spent three nights relaxing and enjoying the warm water and good food at the hotel’s restaurant. The last night we ordered a variety of fish and squid straight from the gulf waters. Our bungalow was very rustic with only six hours of electricity a day, but the gulf views and sounds of the waves were wonderful.
