On Saturday (23 June) we left the lodge near Talkeetna after lunch to take our final Alaskan train trip of about 175 miles to Whittier. Along the way we passed through Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city at about 300,000. We were treated to some beautiful views and wildlife between there and Whittier. When we arrived at Whittier at about 6:30pm, our cruise ship was waiting across the street for us to board. After enjoying the first night festivities on board, we went to sleep.
We woke the next morning in College Fjord and spent about three hours cruising through there. The rest of the day was spent exploring the ship and enjoying the great food. On Monday (25 June) Darren and I booked a balcony breakfast to enjoy as we cruised through Glacier Bay National Park. It was designated a monument in 1925, a national park in 1980 and a World Heritage Site in 1992. Park Rangers boarded the ship and provided great commentary during the time we cruised through the bay. We were able to get up close to see several glaciers and also to see pieces break off, which was very dramatic.
