Sandy and I are now flying at 37,000 feet and have we have just crossed the coast of Africa between the border of Tunisia and Libya. The turquoise water is in stark contrast with the desert city of Tripoli. Visibility is nearly perfect. You can see for hundreds of miles in every direction. Death Valley in California is but a few grains of sand compared to the Sahara. We have been flying for three hours. We have five more to go until we reach our next destination – a stopover – Bujumbura, Burundi. Burundi is a tiny county in Central Africa. Its population is amazingly high – 8.4 million. Rwanda borders on the north and Uganda is just to the north of that. Our route will take us over Chad, the Central African Republic (CAR) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A few hundred miles to the east of our route is Chad’s border with Sudan and the Darfur mountains.
Sandy and I have just finished a three wonderful days in London. We spent our time together mostly revisiting our favorite places – Blackfriars and the Coal Hole (both pubs north of the Themes), Big Ben and the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, Saint Paul’s Cathedral, the National Gallery and the British Museum (home of the Rosetta Stone). We had lunch at the “Crypt” at the church of Saint Martin in the Fields and dinner at the Rock Garden Restaurant in Covent Garden. I ran in Kensington and Hyde Park and the two of us saw Spamalot on the West End. Just before we left for the airport, Sandy and I visited Canary Wharf and took a long afternoon’s walk in Regent’s Park. The weather the entire time was great – clear, sunny days and not too hot.
We plan to spend the next three nights in Entebbe, Uganda. We hope to send another email before we begin our safari through four national parks in the country.
