Lauren and I are in Panama City on a five day trip to celebrate our December birthdays and completion of her finals.
We explored Alaska by train and cruise ship over 13 days in June 2007. The highlights of the visit included two national parks, Denali and Glacier Bay, as well as activities in four cities. The wide open spaces and natural beauty made it a very special trip.
We took the train to the Pacific Ocean, at Whittier, and boarded the cruise ship to continue our journey. The first stop was a day cruise in Glacier Bay National Park, which was spectacular!
After spending time in national parks, arriving in a big city like Chicago was a big change. During the three days we spent here we visited several museums and saw a Chicago Cubs baseball game.
After weeks of planning and researching and packing, the day of departure is here. Even with all the preparations that we had made, we were still busy literally up to the time we left for the airport on Sunday morning.
One of the big splurges on our trip was a transatlantic cruise on the Queen Elizabeth II. The ship made its last regularly scheduled crossings across the Atlantic Ocean in 2003, which made the cruise even more special.
We landed in Southampton and took a short train trip to London. We spent four days there and visited Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, the Cabinet War Rooms, Imperial War Museum, British Museum and the town of Greenwich.
We have been at sea for three days now. We are now approximately halfway between New York and Southampton, at about 600 miles south of Greenland.
Today, we visited the Royal Observatory in the town of Greenwich (as in “Greenwich Mean Time”) just outside of London. This is the location of the Prime Meridian or Longitude 0 degrees.
We are now in route from South Africa to Namibia (about 4 hours into a 21-hour bus trip). It is a fairly comfortable vehicle with 2 stories, air-conditioning, a bathroom and fairly frequent stops to stretch one’s legs.
