Ecuador: Quito
Quito was our last stop during our Ecuador journey. We had an afternoon to explore the Old Town, designated a World Heritage Site.
Off the Grid in Uganda
At the end of June 2008, we took a two week trip to Uganda, via London, to visit the endangered Mountain Gorillas in the southern part of the country. We visited three national parks in all.
Uganda: Entebbe and Ngamba Island
Our first stop in Uganda was Entebbe. We spent two days there acclimating to Africa before beginning our safari. While there, we visited a chimp sanctuary and a botanical garden.
Uganda: Queen Elizabeth National Park
Two days were spent exploring different portions of Uganda’s most popular savanna national park, Queen Elizabeth. We were able to view a variety of animals by the water and in classic African grassland settings.
Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park Mountain Gorilla
The highlight of our journey to Uganda was viewing the endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. We had two opportunities to see them and had different experiences both times.
Uganda: Lake Mburo National Park
Our final stop and national park experience in Uganda was at Lake Mburo. Here we took a late afternoon walking safari to see the animals in a more intimate setting.
Alaska: Fairbanks
Fairbanks was the first stop on our Alaskan journey. We visited a gold mine, the Trans Alaska Pipeline and took a riverboat cruise.
Alaska: Denali National Park
We spent three days in the Denali National Park area, including stays at two different lodges. The highlight of this time was a bus tour on the only paved road inside the park.
Alaska: College Fjord and Glacier Bay National Park
We took the train to the Pacific Ocean, at Whittier, and boarded the cruise ship to continue our journey. The first stop was a day cruise in Glacier Bay National Park, which was spectacular!
Alaska: Inside Passage (Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan)
As we continued towards Vancouver on the cruise, we sailed through Alaska’s Inside Passage and stopped at three well-known cities: Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan.
