Email: Greetings from Encarnacion, Paraguay

When we last wrote we were in Buenos Aries. After our third and final day there we made our way, via the subway, to the central bus station just as it was getting dark. We had tickets to board a bus, scheduled to leave at 9:45pm, heading to Posadas, Argentina which is about an 815 mile, 14 hour trip away. Then we drove across a very modern bridge over the Parana River about three miles to the Paraguayan border.

Email: Greetings from Iguazu Falls, on the border of Brazil and Argentina

Iguazu Falls, which is located on the Parana River between Brazil and Argentina, is one of the great waterfalls of the world. Legend has it that when Eleanor Roosevelt first saw it, she said, “Poor Niagara!”. Iguazu consists of 275 distinct falls along a 2.7km (1.7m) stretch of river. Two thirds of the falls are in Argentina and average about 64 meters (210 ft) in height, with the most impressive one being the U-shaped Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat!) which is 82 meters (269 ft) high. To maximize our visit we chose to spend time viewing the falls from both the Brazilian and Argentinean sides.

Welcome

Welcome

Welcome to Our Distant Journey. This site chronicles our global adventures since we began shooting digital photography in 2000 and video in 2003. To date we have visited over 40 countries on six continents as a couple or with our two children.

We are not travel professionals but want to provide a place to share our emails, pictures, videos, sound bytes and insights from our time on the road in the hope that others might find it useful. Our emails, for example, were written while on the road as we shared our experiences and impressions as things unfolded. This site also contains articles and blog entries providing additional insights and updates on our current activities. Lastly our Train Journeys section chronicles our rail travel throughout six continents.

Our philosophy is to experience travel ‘authentically’, meaning that we minimize the use of planes and try to use public transportation wherever feasible. We try to interact with locals where possible, whether by hiring local guides or even through home stays. We like to mix visits to the iconic places in the world with the adventure that keeps travel fresh and exciting.
