An Introduction to Panama: Long Weekend Sampler
View Panama in a larger map
A long weekend in December 2010 provided a great opportunity to experience Panama on a five day trip. With just three full days in the country, there was time to sample both the Panama City and the surrounding countryside. Even almost constant rain didn’t keep us from walking […]
Email: Greetings from El Valle, Panama
When last we wrote we were in Panama City making do with the extreme weather and the havoc it was reaping on our plans. We were notified on Saturday morning that the other activity that we had booked prior to leaving the US, national park rain forest hiking and river rafting, was also canceled because of the rain storms of the preceding few days. So we spent that afternoon making inquires about other possible day trip options. The one that was the most interesting and had the fewest weather issues was a trip to the town of El Valle.
Email: Greetings from Panama City
Lauren and I are in Panama City on a five day trip to celebrate our December birthdays and completion of her finals. We flew here on Thursday and upon descending into the airport at about 9pm that night I was struck by the views of both the tall skyscrapers making up the Panama City skyline and all the ships sitting off the Pacific coast, presumably wanting to transit the canal. The city is very modern and clean and our B&B is located on a hill where the military officials used to live when the US had control of the canal zone.
Trans Canadian Rail Adventure
A 4,466 km (about 2,775 miles) train journey across Canada provided a great opportunity to experience a wide variety of scenery, from forests laced with lakes and rivers, to wide open prairies to the majesty of the Canadian Rockies. The three day, four night journey across a portion of the second largest country in the world gave one time to see it at a leisurely pace while enjoying the view from the 360 degree observation deck or eating a meal in the dining car.
Why Travel?
We recently returned from a two week trip to South America, visiting Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. It was a tough journey, probably the most adventurous trip in several years that we have taken. We were actually on the ground for only 12 days and seeing four countries in that time was ambitious. What made it more so was the fact that we covered much of it overland, taking a 14 hour overnight bus, and then boarding other local buses for six hours and two hours, along with a 90 minute ferry ride. We also crossed four borders overland, exchanged money between each and had to rely on our high school Spanish throughout, which made things take longer and resulted in some comedic situations. I couldn’t help feeling at one point in the trip, however, that maybe I was getting too old for this.
South American Tango: Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay
For two weeks in March 2010 we sampled the best of central South America, focusing on the countries of Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and Uruguay.
Email: Greetings from Encarnacion, Paraguay
When we last wrote we were in Buenos Aries. After our third and final day there we made our way, via the subway, to the central bus station just as it was getting dark. We had tickets to board a bus, scheduled to leave at 9:45pm, heading to Posadas, Argentina which is about an 815 mile, 14 hour trip away. Then we drove across a very modern bridge over the Parana River about three miles to the Paraguayan border.
Email: Greetings from Montevideo, Uruguay
We are on the last full day of our trip through central South America, having arrived in our fourth and final country, Uruguay. It is the smallest Spanish-speaking country in South America, having only about four million inhabitants. Since it borders Argentina and Brazil many people from those countries come to vacation in Uruguay ’s quaint towns, horseback ride on one of their ranches or relax on their beaches.
Argentina Planning Update: Completing the Itinerary and Hotel Bookings
It is now less than two months before we go to Argentina and surrounding area for two weeks. After much give and take, the itinerary has been finalized.
