A long weekend in December 2010 provided a great opportunity to experience Panama on a five day trip. With just three full days in the country, there was time to sample both the Panama City and the surrounding countryside.
The 2,775 mile train journey across Canada provided a great opportunity to experience a wide variety of scenery, from forests laced with lakes and rivers, to wide open prairies to the majesty of the Canadian Rockies.
After arriving in Toronto and spending Saturday seeing the city, we boarded The Canadian late that night to begin our journey west.
We continued through the plains of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, after leaving Winnipeg. The prairie began to give way as we reached Edmonton early on Tuesday morning. We soon saw the mountains in the distance.
We explored Alaska by train and cruise ship over 13 days in June 2007. The highlights of the visit included two national parks, Denali and Glacier Bay, as well as activities in four cities. The wide open spaces and natural beauty made it a very special trip.
Fairbanks was the first stop on our Alaskan journey. We visited a gold mine, the Trans Alaska Pipeline and took a riverboat cruise.
We spent three days in the Denali National Park area, including stays at two different lodges. The highlight of this time was a bus tour on the only paved road inside the park.
We took the train to the Pacific Ocean, at Whittier, and boarded the cruise ship to continue our journey. The first stop was a day cruise in Glacier Bay National Park, which was spectacular!
As we continued towards Vancouver on the cruise, we sailed through Alaska’s Inside Passage and stopped at three well-known cities: Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan.
The combination of ancient ruins and lazy days on beaches provided the perfect trip back in time for us over New Year’s in 2007.
